By Grace through Faith

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭ESV‬)

Salvation comes to us by grace alone through faith alone. Do you really believe this?

The above passage and other biblical texts are abundantly clear: one is saved by grace and grace alone. No works, no merits, no prayers—no nothing. Salvation is free to all who place their faith in Jesus Christ and repent (Mark 1:15).

Salvation, in a sense, is two-fold. We are saved by the sovereign grace of God. That is free, unmerited favor by the Lord glory who, by sheer mercy, chose to save us. And yet, we are saved by grace through faith; meaning, we use faith as an instrument to believe upon the finished work of Christ.

Here’s the crazy part: the faith we exercise to believe and the repentance we have are not our own, but are gifts of God. There’s no room for boasting, for celebrating ourselves. If it weren’t for God, we’d be doomed.

Friends, salvation is by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. No amount of works, no amount of law-keeping will ever merit eternal life—because it’s impossible. Let us marvel today at the amazing grace of God to save wretches like you and me.
