Book Review: Taste and See

A good devotional is one of the best things in the world. It moves our hearts and allows us to consider what the Lord is doing. If we don’t have much time, a devotional allows us to read a page or two and, if it does what it intends to do, points our gaze to Jesus Christ.

That’s exactly what John Piper does in his devotional Taste and See: 125 Meditations for the Godward Life, published by Crossway.

I’ll be honest: I struggle to read Piper because I think he writes kind of like he preaches—repetitive and passionate but his writing is sometimes hard to keep up with. However, though he writes the same in the devotional, each are brief so it’s easy to follow along and every single one points the believer to Jesus.

Though I haven’t read every devotional yet, just two devotionals in I was already encouraged. His second devotional was over losing his credit card back in the day. He got back home and didn’t even realize it was gone until he found his friend had shipped it back home.

Piper mentioned that he probably would’ve been angry, stressed, and an anxious mess if he had known he’d lost it. But then he points is to the care and love of God, to cast all our anxieties on him.

It’s a simple truth, but a powerful one that we must remember each day: cast all your anxieties on the Lord, for he cares for us.
