Disciplines of a Godly Man

Life requires discipline. Even more, life as a Christian involves incredible discipline. Further than that, life as a Christian man entails much discipline. That is why R. Kent Hughes does a tremendous service to the church in his book Disciplines of a Godly Man, published by Crossway.

Hughes details the art of discipline, why it’s so needed as Christian men, and then goes over many different areas in which we need the utmost discipline if we desire to be faithful to the Lord. One of those areas is our prayer lives. “If I throw out a boathook from the boat and catch hold of the shore and pull,” Hughes wrote, “do I pull the shore to me, or do I pull myself to the shore? Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God.”

Hughes continues to write about the discipline worship, ministry, the tongue, and many more important things—including fatherhood. “Some fathers exasperate their children by being overly strict and controlling. They need to remember that rearing children is like holding a wet bar of soap — too firm a grasp and it shoots from your hand, too loose a grip and it slides away. A gentle but firm hold keeps you in control.”

I could keep going, but I wouldn’t be able to stop! There’s a reason why this book has sold as many as it has. It’s timeless and such a gift to the church. I highly recommend it.
