In the 1 Corinthians 10:31, the Apostle Paul exhorts us to do all things to the glory of God: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
The “whatever you do” in this verse is, as you’d imagine, is all-encompassing. It brings infinite value and worth to the most seemingly mundane and unimportant tasks.
And it provides ultimate meaning and purpose in your vocation. It doesn’t matter what your vocation is—you can, and should, do it to God’s glory.
Mail courier? Do it to God’s glory.
Accountant? Do it to God’s glory.
Call center representative? Do it to God’s glory.
Fast-food worker? Do it to God’s glory.
Social media manager? Do it to God’s glory.
Nonprofit executive? Do it to God’s glory.
Stay-at-home mom? Do it to God’s glory.
The list goes on. It applies to everything. It doesn’t matter what your job is, you can do it for the glory of God.
It can be rather easy, if we’re not careful, to feel as though our vocation is pointless, as if we’re not making a difference. I have felt that on multiple occasions in my vocational career. But what we must remember, above all else, is that we’re working into the Lord (Col. 3:23).
Gene Edward Veith said:
Essentially, your vocation is to be found in the place you occupy in the present. A person stuck in a dead-end job may have higher ambitions, but for the moment, that job, however humble, is his vocation. Flipping hamburgers, cleaning hotel rooms, emptying bedpans all have dignity as vocations, spheres of expressing love of neighbor through selfless service, in which God is masked.
Additionally, Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” When we dedicate our work to God, then everything else will follow suit and we will feel an abiding sense of purpose in our vocation.
“A Christian’s work should be an act of worship, performed to the glory of God, and marked by excellence,” Tim Keller wrote, “regardless of whether it is in ministry or secular life.”
Working hard at our jobs is an important part of living out our spiritual walk with Jesus. How we work indicates how we worship. This is why that, as a Christian, it’s imperative to have a good work ethic. We don’t ultimately work for our boss, our boss’s boss, or our company. We ultimately work for God; in turn, we should want to do a great job in our position not to just be good employees but to please the Lord in our vocation.
Christian, again, your purpose in your vocation is that you work to the Lord. You work to the Lord whether you’re a bank teller, an executive officer, flipping burgers, doing landscape work, or literally anything else. So keep your head down, be the best at whatever it is, not to puff yourself up with pride but because God has put you in that position to glorify Him.
