“Discernment is not simply a matter of telling the difference between what is right and wrong; rather it is the difference between right and almost right.” (Charles H. Spurgeon)
Believer, do you have discernment? I imagine that we all have discernment to some degree. We know what the gospel is as Christians. But do we understand the different things—all the different people—that should cause us to increase in discernment?
Like the Prince of Preachers said in the quote above, discernment is about knowing the difference right and almost right. It only takes a little heresy to confused even the most seasoned Christian that has his or her guard down. To be sure, we don’t want to be come heresy hunters, looking for heresy in all the wrong place. Many times, we call things heresy that aren’t so
But there’s many more Christians who lack discernment. They don’t have the first clue about what’s right or wrong teaching, what to look out for and what to be listen to with open hearts. Friends, the only way to practice discernment is to be in God’s Word. Banks know counterfeit money because they study authentic money; the same is true with Christian doctrine. Study doctrine and you’ll see when counterfeits creep up.
Be mindful of any teaching that appears to distort the gospel of grace, even a little bit—a little bit is enough to send people to Hell. Lean on the Word of God, where God has revealed His promises and character to us.
