“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)
We are all born in a state against the holy God of the universe. Because of original sin, we inherit that sinful nature. As the late RC Sproul once said, “We’re not sinners because we sin. We sin because we’re sinners.” In other words, sinning is part of our nature before Christ.
So, simply stated, we were at odds with God before Christ. The Bible states is even more bluntly: we were His enemies. We weren’t simply on “bad terms” or needing to “work it out.” We we’re enemies of God slaves to sin. And there was no way for us to claw ourselves out. We were stuck.
But God. But Jesus. But unimaginable grace! Because of the person and work of Jesus Christ, we now have peace—eternal, abiding peace—with God. We need not worry about His wrath, for it has been appeased by the atonement of Christ.
Let’s marvel at the fact that we are now at peace with God. And not only peace, mind you, but we are His children and He is our Father. Again: what grace! We are so undeserving, such recipients of pure, sovereign grace.
