Why so Anxious?

Why so Anxious?

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

God doesn’t want us to be anxious. He desires for us to fully trust Him, to wholly lean on Him, to have faith in His goodness, mercy, sovereignty, and love.

When the cares of this world weigh us down, it’s all the more pertinent for us to remember the words of the Apostle Paul. It doesn’t matter what it is—our health, our job, our finances, our relationships—God tells us not to be anxious. When we are anxious, we are, in the end, not trusting the Lord. Anxiety swells up, worry springs forth when we try to live life on our own accord, by our own strength, for our own self. Life is hard, but it’s extremely difficult when we act like we’re the sovereign one.

Part of God’s command to not be anxious is just that—a command. I believe we’re sinning when we are anxious in that we’re not trusting God. But there’s also a part of this that is more God saying, “I don’t want this for you. Trust me. Don’t burden yourself.” He still doesn’t want us to be anxious—for what does it add to our life?—but He’s concerned about our hearts. He loves and cares for us.

Christian, what is crushing you? What is keeping you up at night? Give it to God. Let Him take care of it. Reflect on the glories of Heaven and of Christ, and all our worries, all our cares, all our anxieties will seem minuscule.
