“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
What do you love most? Is there something you simply can’t live without? There are many things in life we hold dearly—our families, friends, and even possessions. Of course, we should hold our loved ones dearly. But what about possessions? What about things we own?
Jesus tells us in Matthew’s Gospel that our heart is with what we treasure most. So, believer, ask yourself: What do you treasure most?
Our answer resides in what we give priority, time, and energy to. Maybe you treasure money most. Perhaps status and job title is what you find most treasurable. Or even you are obsessed with fitness! Regardless, there are things in life which reveal the true priorities of our heart.
Problem is, our hearts reveal Jesus is not our treasure. We wander, we fall back, we sway back and forth. Our hearts are deeply fickle and love things far too much. Is it bad to enjoy material possessions? Of course not! But it is bad—sin, even—to enjoy them (to treasure them) more than Christ.
So, ask yourself again: What does your heart treasure? May I put this on the table: we must treasure Christ above all because, at the end of the day, He’s the only thing, or person, we can 100% rely on. Let’s treasure the Son of God, and our lives will follow suit.
